Tucked in among the lush farmland and countryside near the southeastern corner of Lake Michigan, is a spectacular cluster of large and small lakes knit closely together in the unincorporated Sister Lakes area of Michigan. Both serene and pristine, beautiful Magician Lake is the largest of these lakes and truly stands out among them. This 500+ acre, all sports, spring fed lake has a sandy bottom with some of the clearest water of any of the lakes in the area and also features numerous islands. As the story goes, the clear water, deep visibility and sandy bottom have long been thought of as having a “magical” allure, hence the name, and we could not agree more.
Docks line the shore of this lake which consists of mostly private homes built directly on its shore, many having beachfronts, as taking full advantage of the lake lifestyle is a major priority among the residents here. There are few if any vacation rentals available anymore, with most of the former resorts having been converted into private homes and most of the old cottages having been replaced with new construction of larger, much more expansive homes. This construction of larger new homes has the added benefit of increasing land values by double digits and this trend shows no sign of declining anytime in the near future.
Just a few miles away, the modern and culture-rich small town of Dowagiac, whose slogan is “Real People, Real Community, Real Opportunity”, is another wonderful find. Good schools, wonderful shops and restaurants, a good hospital, plus an airport and Amtrak train station, all make this an amazing combination of lake living and small town living with great transportation and everything else you could possibly need.
Recreation abounds throughout the Sister Lakes area with all the lake activity as well as numerous wineries, produce stands, bowling, roller skating, and the area is home to the annual Sister Lakes Triathlon every July. Lake Michigan is a quick drive and Magician Lake is located just two hours from Chicago and less then an hour from both from Kalamazoo and South Bend.
